Canadian snake root, commonly known as wild ginger, occurs naturally in eastern North American woodlands. Although the powdered root was once used as a flavoring, aristolochic acid present in the plant is now known to be carcinogenic. However, it is safe to use topically.

what else you should know

canadian snake root

At one time, Canadian snake root was used to make teas and digestifs. Native Americans and Europeans settling into North America commonly used the root to produce formulas to counter outbreaks of flu and fever. The herb is still widely used in traditional Chinese medicine. However, both Health Canada and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration have issued warnings in recent years that the aristolochic acid content in the herb is linked to permanent kidney damage and cancers of the urinary tract.
