Mangifera indica
plant overview

Mangifera indica, commonly known as the mango tree, is a large, majestic evergreen tree belonging to the cashew family (Anacardiaceae). It is celebrated globally as one of the most culturally significant and widely consumed tropical fruits. The tree provides dense, lush shade and produces incredibly sweet, fleshy, and aromatic fruits that have earned it the title of the "king of fruits" in many tropical regions.

01.
A Bit of Botany

The mango tree can grow to impressive heights, often reaching up to 100 feet in optimal conditions with a broad, dome-shaped canopy. In late winter or early spring, the tree produces long terminal panicles containing hundreds to thousands of tiny, fragrant, yellowish-white flowers. These blooms eventually give way to large, fleshy stone fruits (drupes) containing a single, large, flat seed surrounded by sweet, juicy pulp.

Nomenclature

It is most frequently referred to simply as mango. The botanical source is Mangifera indica. The genus name Mangifera combines the regional name "mango" with the Latin ferre, meaning "to bear,” while indica indicates its origins in India.

02.
Cultivation & Harvesting

considerations for growing mango

  • Climate - Mango trees require a highly frost-free, tropical or warm subtropical climate. They thrive with abundant sunshine and have a distinct requirement for a dry period leading up to the flowering stage to stimulate abundant fruit production.
  • Soil - The trees are highly adaptable to various soil types, ranging from sandy loams to laterite soils, provided there is excellent drainage. They do not tolerate waterlogged root systems.
  • Growing - Commercial mangoes are typically propagated through grafting to ensure the resulting trees produce consistent, high-quality fruit true to the desired variety. The trees require regular moisture during fruit development but minimal watering once established and mature.
  • Harvesting - Mango fruits are typically harvested by hand using long picking poles with specialized baskets to catch the fruit without bruising. They are usually picked when mature but slightly firm to allow for safe transport and ripening.
  • Preserving - After processing the fruit pulp into powder, store the product in a sealed container in a cool place with low humidity and away from direct sunlight.

The Rest of the Story

mango history, folklore, literature & more

The mango holds a deeply revered place in the history and culture of India, where it has been cultivated for over 4,000 years. It is intertwined with regional folklore, religion, and art. In traditional customs, mango leaves are strung together to decorate doorways during festivals and weddings as a symbol of good fortune and prosperity. Ancient trade routes eventually brought the prized fruit to the Middle East, Africa, and eventually the Americas, where it quickly became a staple tropical ingredient worldwide.
