Tongkat ali is an evergreen shrubby tree in the quassia family indigenous Southeast Asia. Its informal name translates to “Ali’s walking stick,” a reference to its reputation for increasing energy and male libido. In fact, its alleged properties and long history of traditional use have given rise to a variety of suggestive common names, such as Malaysian ginseng, long Jack and penawar pahit (“bitter charm”).
