Bitter melon is a tropical perennial vine in the Cucurbitaceae family, which makes it a gourd and closely related to pumpkin, squash, watermelon, zucchini and cucumber. While the fruit and leaf are prepared as vegetables in African, Asian, and Caribbean cuisines, bitter melon herb extracts and powders are taken as dietary supplements and are also used in natural cosmetics.
