Calcium citrate is a calcium salt obtained as a byproduct in the synthesis of citric acid. It is one of the two leading forms of calcium supplements, the other being calcium carbonate. However, although calcium citrate is not as potent as the latter, it is better tolerated and absorbed, especially in people who struggle with digestive issues due to low levels of stomach acid or those who take acid-reducing heartburn medications.
