periwinkle herb

Periwinkle, also known as lesser periwinkle and creeping myrtle, is an evergreen groundcover that's very popular with North American gardeners, although the plant originates from the Middle East and Asia.

The aerial parts of this plant contain two alkaloids from which drugs that enhance blood flow are produced. Vincamine, sold under various generic names and brand names, including Oxybral and Anacervix, is classified as a cerebral vasodilator. The other alkaloid, vinpocetine, is derived from vincamine and is available as a dietary supplement. Because of the effects of these alkaloids, you should not use this herb if you take prescription medications that increase blood flow without talking to your doctor.
