Buckthorn is a small deciduous tree that naturally occurs throughout Europe, and East Asia. Despite the name, the tree does not possess thorns. Also known as alder buckthorn (and not to be confused with sea buckthorn), the bark of this tree is harvested, dried and aged for a year before processing for its store of anthraquinones, compounds in the quinone family which exert potent cathartic effects.

Buckthorn buck powder is also used to produce natural dyes that range in color from yellow to olive green and pink to rusty red.

culinaryBuckthorn bark powder may be prepared as tea.
householdBuckthorn bark powder contains a high concentration of tannins, which acts as a mordant and no other is required to produce a dye. Simmering will produce a pale yellow, while fermenting longer in a bath with an alkaline solution will produce a color ranging from pink to dusty rose and rusty red. However, the addition of alum will yield mustard gold and iron an olive green.
wellnessThe powder may be encapsulated as a dietary supplement.
safetyThis herb should not be taken in large doses or long-term, either of which may lead to dehydration and adverse events from the loss of minerals and electrolytes associated with diarrhea, including an increased risk of colorectal cancer.
