Acai is a South American palm tree that produces a dark purple fruit commonly known as Acai berry. While the leaves of the tree are used to make woven textiles and the wood is used in construction, the fruit is harvested for local use as food and medicine. Acai is also a major export of Brazil with the U.S. being the leading importer. Pigments in the berry serve as coloring agents in the food, beverage and cosmetic industries, and the powdered fruit is used as a dietary supplement and is an ingredient in functional foods.
