Hungarian paprika is bold red in color and is sweeter than other varieties, although it still provides smoky flavor. In Hungary, the spice typically accompanies the salt shaker at the table instead of black pepper.

powdered hungarian paprika

As you might have guessed, Hungary is the largest producer of Hungarian paprika. In fact, it’s the national spice of the country. In addition to being a key ingredient in Hungarian goulash, our paprika for sale is also commonly added to marinades, condiments, tomato sauces and lentil stews.

There are eight grades of Hungarian paprika. The most colorful grade is referred to as különleges, while édesnemes is characterized as sweet and pungent and eros is classified as the hottest despite a muted color. For the most part, Hungarian paprika distributed in the U.S. is of the édesnemes variety.
