Yohimbe is an evergreen tree native to Africa. In addition to having a long history of use in its native habitat, yohimbe is found in various over-the-counter preparations sold in pharmacies. The bark contains a number of active compounds, most notably an indole alkaloid called yohimbine. Because this substance may act on the sympathetic nervous system and produce unpleasant side effects, you should not use this herb without medical supervision.

yohimbe bark

Yohimbe bark is obtained from an African evergreen tree in the Rubiaceae family, which includes coffee. The dried bark has been used for centuries as an aphrodisiac in Africa and elsewhere. In the US, yohimbe is sold as an over-the-counter dietary supplement.

The herb contains an alkaloid called yohimbine, the stimulatory effects of which are well known and documented. Caution is warranted in its use, however, because this compound also increases blood flow and may also increase blood pressure. Check with your health care provider before using this herb if you have a chronic condition or take other medicines.
