Lily of the valley is a flowering plant in the same family as asparagus commonly cultivated as a garden ornamental. The small, bell-shaped, white flowers, which symbolize the renewal of happiness, are very popular in wedding bouquets, such as those carried by Princess Grace Kelly and Catherine Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge. Also known as Our Lady's Tears, lily of the valley is associated with tears shed by Mary at the crucifixion of Jesus. The plant is also called May Bells in reference to its bloom time.

The dried leaf and flower is used in potpourri or herb pillows. Due to the presence of cardiac glycosides, internal use of this herb is not recommended without the guidance of a qualified health care practitioner.

lily of the valley

Lily of the valley, also known as May Lily and Ladder-to-Heaven, is a low-growing perennial native to Europe and Asia and now naturalized elsewhere, including eastern North America. As its common name indicates, the plant is a member of the lily family.

Although the tiny bell-shaped flowers are fragrant, they do not retain their scent when dried. In fact, attempts to infuse the flowers in oil for use in perfumery requires exchanging the flowers for fresh several times. The dried flowers and leaves can, however, be used as filler in herbal sachets and pillows, with other herbs added for fragrance. The herb is also used to produce natural dyes.

Toxicity of lily of the valley is due to the presence of convallamarin, convallarin and several other glycosides that act on the heart in the same way that digitalis obtained from foxglove does.

Note that this herb is highly toxic to cats and other small pets. Keep away from children.
