Background: Peppermint has been used for centuries. It was found in Egyptian pyramids that were as old as 1000 B.C. and it was also used by ancient Romans and the Greeks. Peppermint is used for many conditions, but is most well known for its effect on the digestive system.
Peppermint is primarily used to treat ailments of the digestive system.
Digestive System: Peppermint is used to treat gas, indigestion, colic, and cramps. It can be used to help increase the production of digestive juices and bile. It relieves diarrhea and constipation as well.
Infection: The essential oil can be diluted and applied to the chest to work as an inhalant for respiratory ailments. It can also help treat digestive infections.
Pain relief: Peppermint can be used to treat pain and sensitivity of the skin. It can also be used to treat migraine headaches and other headaches.
Description: Peppermint is an annual herb that has a very strong scent. It is not known where peppermint originated, but it can be found wroldwide. The aerial parts are collected in the sumer before the plant flowers.
Dosage:
As a tincture, take as prescribed for digestive problems.
As an infusion, drink 1 cup after meals.
As a lotion, apply to skin irritation.
Essential oil can be diluted and dabbed on the temples for headache or applied to the chest for respiratory infections.
Capsules may be prescribed to treat irritable bowel syndrome.
Safety: Children under 5 should not take peppermint. Do not take essential oil internally unless supervised by a health care professional. Essential oil should not be used at all for children under 12. Consult your health care provider before beginning use of any herb.
