Valerian root is a wayside herb found throughout Europe and North America that is also commonly grown as a garden ornamental. The root of the plant was used extensively by the ancient Greeks and Romans. Valerian root powder can be used to make extracts.

Valerian is an ornamental perennial noted for its attractive, fragrant flowers and its notoriously foul-smelling roots. Cats are known to turn over the plant to expose the roots, it has a similar affect for felines as catnip.
