Valerian root is a wayside herb found throughout Europe and North America that is also commonly grown as a garden ornamental. The root of the plant was used extensively by the ancient Greeks and Romans.

Today, we know that valerian root contains many active compounds, most notably valerenic acid, hesperidin and a neurotransmitting chemical called gamma-aminobutyric acid, or GABA. Powdered valerian root can be used to make extracts and tinctures, but it is more commonly encapsulated as a dietary supplement.

valerian root

Valerian is an ornamental perennial noted for its attractive, fragrant flowers and its notoriously foul-smelling roots. Cats are known to turn over the plant to expose the roots, which they find highly intoxicating. The reason for this behavior is a chemical in the root called actinidine. This is one of two known naturally occurring pheromones that cause cats to go crazy. The other is nepetalactone in catnip.

While people are less enthusiastic about getting a whiff of valerian root, the herb has redeeming value during times of stress as a mild sedative and gentle sleep aid. The active compounds in the root responsible for these actions are a class of iridoid alkaloids collectively referred to as valepotriates.
