Magnesium citrate is a water-soluble formula that combines magnesium oxide and citric acid. It is used as a saline laxative to cleanse the bowel prior to surgery or certain medical procedures, such as a colonoscopy or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Also known as E number E345, magnesium citrate is also used in the food and beverage industries to regulate acidity in soft drinks and act as a preservative, and in supplements as a mineral salt. It is also a common ingredient in various skin care products.
