Siberian fir is a highly resilient coniferous evergreen tree that thrives in subarctic temperatures with little sunlight in the tiaga forest of northern Russia. Stretching more than 3,500 miles, it is the largest forest in the world, containing a continuous landscape of coniferous evergreens and is home to one-third of the world’s trees. Due to soil shifting caused by permafrost, the trees tend to tilt in different directions. For this reason, the area is sometimes referred to as a “drunken forest” and Siberian fir trees as “tipsy trees.”
The essential oil is obtained from the leaves, or needles, of the tree via steam distillation. The crisp aroma and grounding effects are due to the main components in the oil—camphor, safrole and cineole.
