As the name implies, French green clay comes from ancient bedrock deposits in France. However, this clay is also mined from other sites in Europe, as well as the northwestern U.S. Like other clays, French green clay contains iron oxides, but its characteristic green color comes from the decomposition of plants.

It is used in cosmetics to lighten skin and to absorb excess oil.

Green clay, also referred to as green illite and Montmorillonite clay, is a naturally occurring material that is mined several thousand feet below the earth’s crust. Also known as French green clay because of the abundant deposits located in France, this cosmetic clay gets its greenish hue from the presence of blue-green algae and chlorophyll left by decomposed plant life.

French green clay is valued for cosmetic use because of its exceptional absorbent properties and its ability to draw out impurities from the skin. The detoxifying quality of this material is best illustrated by its use in 1986 by the former Soviet Union, who used a massive quantity of French green clay to cover the failed nuclear reactor site at Chernobyl. The clay was also added to chocolate bars, which were distributed to the residents of the ill-fated city.

Description: French Green Clay contains an abundance of valuable elements, which include montmorillonite, as well as several important mineral oxides, magnesium, calcium, potassium, dolomite, silica, manganese, phosphorous, silicon, copper, and selenium. Iron oxides, and decomposed plant matter give the clay its green color

French Green Clay is mined from very deep deposits that can be up to two thousand feet below the earths surface. Once the clay is mined it is brought out into the sun to remove excess water and moisture and to make it easier to work with. After the clay has dehydrated it is ground very finely with a large Micro Pulverizer. It is then laid out in the sun one more time to dry any possible residual moisture.
