Active Compounds: High concentrations of flavonoids and vitamins are likely responsible for the beneficial effects. Contains vitamin C, flavonoids, triterpenoid saponins, carboxylic acids, and coumarins.
Background: Chickweed grows abundantly wherever the white man has traveled, and can be found world-wide in fields, landfills, roadbeds and gardens. New leaf growth and seeds of the plant are a favorite of young chicks and birds, suggested by the name "Chickweed."
Description: Chickweed is a ground-creeping biennial or annual weed with succulent opposing leaves measuring ½ inch in length. The white, star-shaped flowers bloom from early spring to late fall, and their petals close up in dark, inclement weather. The young leaves have the flavor of spinach and can be used in salads.
