Raphanus sativus

radish

plant overview
bitter, sweet radish seed

Most people are familiar with the common turnip-like root vegetable that usually ends up in a salad, but the radish plant also produces edible seed. In China, radish seed is referred to as Lai Fu Zi, and is said to disperse lung Qi. Like mustard seed, radish seed can be used to prepare spicy condiments or can be added whole or lightly crushed to flavored vinegars and marinades.

a little botanical information about radish

description
The radish (Raphanus sativus) is an edible root vegetable of the Brassicaceae family.

Radish color ranges from white to red. Radishes themselves are round to cylindrically shaped. A longer root form grows up to 15 cm (6 in) long, compared to the smaller, rounder form. The sweet tasting flesh will become bitter if the vegetable is left for too long in the ground.

Radish leaves, have a lyrate shape and are arranged in a rosette, with sizes ranging from 10–15 cm (4–6 in) in small cultivars, to up to 45 cm (18 in) in large cultivars.
