A Bit of Botany

a little botanical information on strawberry

description
Fragaria vesca is a perennial herbaceous plant of the Rosaceae family.

Strawberry plants can grow to around one foot in height and are characterized by long arching runners or stolons, which form new plantlets at the tip. These allow the strawberry plant to reproduce vegetatively as well as by seed.

The plant's short, woody stems and a basal rosette of compound leaves have 3 coarsely toothed leaflets around 2 1/2 inches long. Strawberry's small, white, 5-parted flowers, are 1/2 to 3/4 inches and, occur in small clusters.

Uncultivated strawberries varieties formed in the wild are quite small, and they generally ripen to red, although there is a also white variety. The strawberry is not a true berry, but is a fleshy receptacle bearing multiple fruits on the surface. These are actually achenes which are small, one-seeded fruits with hard coverings that do not split open (or dehisce) when ripe.
