Background: Goldenseal has been used by American Indians for hundreds of years. It's an ancient remedy for everything from eye inflammation to liver problems. While it was once used to treat a huge range of health issues, it's now used as an antibiotic and astringent.

Applications: Antibiotic/Astringent

Goldenseal is primarily used to treat digestive problems and respiratory infections of the mucous membranes.

Digestion: Goldenseal can help to clean the mucous membrane tissues that line the digestive tract. It helps to reduce inflammation and protect the gut from infection.

Respiratory System: Goldenseal can be used to help fight infections in the respiratory system. It also helps with infections in the eyes. It helps to reduce mucus in these areas.

Women's Health: Goldenseal is also used by many midwives during childbirth to stop bleeding. It can also reduce menstrual bleeding when it becomes too heavy.

Description:
Goldenseal is a perennial plant hat grows only to about 1 foot tall. It does not flower. The yellow root is collected during the fall and dried for use.

Goldenseal Dosage:
As a tincture, take 20 drops with water 3 times a day to reduce mucus.

As an infusion, Goldenseal may be applied to treat yeast infections.

In capsule form, goldenseal can be taken to reduce digestive inflammation. 500 mg should be taken 3 times daily.

As a decoction, gargle with 50 ml 3-4 times daily for sore throats.

Safety:
Goldenseal can be toxic if taken in high doses. Don't take this herb if you have high blood pressure, are pregnant, or nursing. Consult your health care provider before beginning use of any herb.
