echinacea purpurea root

Echinacea purpurea, also known as American coneflower, in a North American flowering herb in the daisy family that is grown as a garden plant and harvested as an herbal. The branched root of the plant contains a number of active compounds, including caffeic acid derivatives, alkylamides and phenols.

E. purpurea is one of two closely related species with a natural range that includes some parts of the northeast, the Great Plains and the Pacific Northwest, both of which are used interchangeably. Europeans learned how to harvest and prepare the herb from several Native American tribes, including the Lakotah, Pawnee, Cheyenne and Kiowa.
